Start with one useful conversation
- If you are choosing care: take page 2 on a visit. Ask how to verify the program’s current status, where to find inspection information and how the adults support children through everyday routines. Compare written answers and your observations.
- If your start date is approaching: use page 3 to assign the tasks that need doing first. Confirm hours, transport, required documents, supplies and the provider’s settling-in process.
- If care has begun: try the daily handoff on page 7 and weekly planner on page 8. Agree on a brief update format that both you and the caregiver can use.
A preparation timeline is an organizer, not a deadline for a child to settle. Review the plan with the caregiver and adjust it to the child and setting.
What to share with a caregiver
The getting-to-know-my-child sheet gives you space for your child’s preferred name, communication, interests, comforting strategies, routines and support preferences. Keep notes specific: “They point to their cup when they want a drink” is easier to act on than “They are difficult in the morning.”
Keep official care instructions separate
Use the provider’s required forms for emergency contacts, pickup authorization, allergies, medications and individualized care plans. This printable does not replace them. Keep completed worksheets private and share them directly with trusted caregivers.
Questions about the planner
Can I use this with a nanny, relative or babysitter?
Yes. Select the handoff and planning pages that fit the arrangement. Program-specific questions may not apply to every caregiver.
Do I need to buy childcare supplies first?
Ask the provider what they supply, what they require and what they allow before buying extras. The packing page is a conversation guide, not a shopping requirement.
Does this tell me whether a provider is safe or licensed?
No. Verify current information with the relevant regulator and review the provider’s policies and records. The planner helps organize your questions; it does not assess a provider.
What if the transition is especially difficult?
Discuss your concerns with the caregiver and revisit the plan. If distress is persistent, worsening or affecting daily life, contact your child’s healthcare professional for individual guidance.
